NO WAY BACK
In Stranded on Grzbt we meet aliens who speak English. In fact, it is their secret trade language, not translated by any current tech. They tell of a genius ancestor from Earth who traversed space in a homemade rocket ship.
This is his story. Wil fled Germany during WWII, not wanting to develop bombs that would kill entire cities. His Granmother, who he visited befor he slipped away,told him she saw him inthe stars, with children of his own.
Years later, living on a remote farm on the Canadian prairie, he makes his life's work, a rocket capable of taking him into space. He expects to die there since there is no way back to Earth, but is saved by spacefaring trading clan.
