So, I've been learning about sex...

Writing it, that is!

I write sensual M/F romance. which is probably around a 1 on a 1-10 erotic romance scale. The past few months I've been reading hot authors and wondering if and how to up my heat level--which would open up submitting to a few publishers I'm interested in. I don't think it would be a huge difference in my writing style, but I wanted to try it.

This One is only 2.99 on Amazon!!!
I read a couple  craft books:

After that I asked a few writers for input.

"Add sexual tension!!" Was the biggest tip I received.

(If you are an erotic romance writer and have some tips, put them in comments!)

I set up a Scrivener binder with tips, checklists etc and pulled out a nearly finished WIP, to see if I saw any places to add sexual tension etc. And I did!

I'm not done yet with this 'sexy content edit' but I think it is giving the story more depth and richness(also hotness.)

  1. I can certainly relate to this. I've been told less mechanics, more 'how does it feel'? Still workin' on it.

  2. I've been reading lots of EC titles, good selling ones, to get a clue.

I'm thinking of inviting erotic romance writers to guest blog--with their tips of the trade!

  3. If you're writing erotica, readers tend to want the physical stuff to picture. If you're writing romantica, they also want the mental stuff. Mental allows for romantic growth in erotic romance (romantica). I can always tell when I get a negative review. The reviewer expected erotica but wound up with erotic romance (more explicit sex scenes with romantic growth). So, more of the "how does it feel' will work make EC happy but they also want the mechanics. ;P

I also bought the top 10-15 erotic (sub-genre) romances I classified my early work as (because I wasn't writing erotica but my editor asked for more explicit sex) and analyzed what works for readers!

I also heard stats show last year's m/m erotica sales dropped 10% and that the best-selling heat levels selling were 3 flames, not 5 flames, at ARE. There's you a little info to make you feel better!

  4. Interesting, Skhye. I know I prefer a 3 flame to a 5 flame romance. I'd like to bring in a story at 3K.
